MAXIxray™ Constant Potential X-Ray Systems
Jacobsen’s MAXIxray™ constant potential x-ray systems, with power up to 4.5 kW and high voltage up to 450 kV, can be used for a wide variety of industrial inspections tasks. The MAXIxray™ is used in radioscopic as well as radiographic inspection systems and x-ray shielded rooms. Due to their high output stability and precise energy setting, these x-ray systems are also excellent for scanning methods like computed tomography.

The field of applications for the MAXIxray™ x-ray systems ranges from the inspection of low-density material such as plastics and rubber to light metal and up to thick walled materials of high density like steel (up to 100mm thick).

MAXIxray™ Series systems are either monopolar (Cathode only) or bipolar (Cathode and Anode) x-ray systems. A complete x-ray system is made up of a control unit (MAXItouch™), a generator (MAXIvolt™), a source (MAXItube™), a cooler (MAXIcool™), and a high voltage cable, and accessories, if desired.

Safety and Protective Devices

The following safety devices are standard on MAXIxray Series systems:

bullet.gif    Key switch protection inhibiting unauthorized operation
bullet.gif   EMERGENCY-STOP locks down push button
  bullet.gif   Automatic switch-off upon X-ray-On lamp failure
  bullet.gif   Adjustable pre-warning time
bullet.gif   Dual high voltage contactors with redundancy monitoring
bullet.gif   Two independent external safety circuits (e.g. door interlock)
bullet.gif   Radiation safety interlock (DIN 54113) or primary interlock (US CFR 1020.40)

Additionally, for the proctection of the x-ray components, the tube temperature, coolant temperature, coolant flow, generator temperature, as well as input and output voltages and currents are monitored. If any of these values exceeds safe limits, the system will be shut down to prevent damage.

The MAXItouch™ control unit is a 12" touch screen computer based unit that is providing all controls and comfort options to help the user in getting the best of the inspection. MAXItouch™ is intelligent unit able to display, retrieve and record all radioscopic/radiographic related data. MAXItouch™ controls and adapts the power demand to the tube according the settings by the user. It includes many automatic features like the well known automatic preheating system. The controller can also talk to plant networks for either interfacing with other plant systems or sending data to a networked file server. In terms of safety, all components in the MAXIxray™ system are connected to the controller, and the controller continuously monitors and sends commands to them. Any control or troubleshooting procedures can be done through the touch screen interface. The MAXItouch™ is perfectly safe and easy to use in the field displaying all necessary information on a 12" touch screen computer based unit.

MAXIvolt™ Generator

The MAXIvolt™ generator is high frequency constant potential stationary 19" rack mount unit for 160kV or 320kV or stand-alone mounted on caster’s base for 225kV or 450kV unit. MAXIvolt™ generators are built around a sealed, oil and gas free, solid stage voltage multiplier. High power electronics areused to reduce servicing time, size and weight, and to minimize connection points. Generators are available in 160, 225, 320 or 450kV. Available power is 2.25kW for monopolar or 4.5 kW for bipolar x-ray systems.

MAXItube™ Sources

X-ray sources are chosen based on the application they will be used for. For high sharpness, a tube with a small focal spot size is used, while for high absorbing applications tubes with power up to 4.5 kW can be used. X-ray tubes are generally equipped with dual filaments that can provide the user either different focal spot size for wider ranges of applications or of the same size, as a backup, in case one filament burns out.

MAXIcool™ Cooler

MAXIcool™ is either a water (W) or an oil (O) cooling system. The water (W) cooler serves for cooling monopolar metal-ceramic tubes. The oil (O) cooler serves for cooling bipolar metal-ceramic tubes. The cooling capacity is matched to power value of the tube. Cooling performance is monitored by a temperature sensor and a flow sensor.  Both sensors are connected to inputs on the generator and controller.  If coolant temperature rises above a safe point, or if the coolant flow stops, the high voltage is turned off.

Cables

Cables connect the various components of the system.  The components have been designed to have as few cables as possible. Connectors and cables are industrial grade and are selected especially for the current they drive. All connectors are coded to prevent cross-plugging.

High voltage cables are available in 5, 10, 15 and 20 meter lengths.

MAXIxray™ 160/225 - Unipolar constant potential X-ray systems

The 2.25 kW X-ray systems have been designed and configured for use in manual, semi-automated and fully automated radioscopic applications.

The typical application of each X-ray system is tailored towards specific target areas like low density applications, plastics and rubber compounds and aluminum and steel applications like casting X-ray inspection.

Typical Unipolar X-Ray Setup

The unipolar x-ray systems feature very high output stability, a precise energy setting and an extremely fast change over to any selected new value. The wide range of industrial inspection tasks calls for a universal, easy to use control unit for the X-ray system realized in the MAXItouch™ Controller. The set-up modes are menu driven. All signals, operating mode and fault diagnosis of internal or external errors are displayed in clear text which can be easily displayed in a number of optional languages. Furthermore an infinite number of programs may be stored on the host computer.

MAXIxray™ 320/450 - Bipolar constant potential X-ray systems

The high energy and the high dose rates of the 320kV/450kV bipolar X-ray systems with a power up to 4.5 kW can be used for a wide variety of industrial applications ranging from light alloys (up to 350mm thick) and thin walled materials of low density to thick walled materials of high density steel (up to 100mm thick).
